The electronic artist Claire Boucher, professionally known as Grimes, can best be described as an enigma. Boucher does not feel like a real person in any way, shape, or form. Grimes has five albums, one of which was made entirely on Garageband in the span of three weeks. She was born in Vancouver in 1998, and started making music in 2007.
Her debut album Geidi Primes was weirdly only released on cassette when it first came out in 2010. Weird may be the only way to describe most of her earlier music. She made Geidi Primes completely by herself, giving her audience a bit of a peek into her mind. Grimes described this album as cyber twee and the most MySpace album ever.. Though the album is only 31 minutes long, it features 11 tracks, my favorites being Rosa and Avi. Geidi Primes is said to be sort of a Dune concept album, as her dream at the time would have been to direct the Dune movie.
Later that year, she released her second album, Halfaxa, which she describes as her most underrated album. This began the path to where she is today, as she started to tour outside of Montreal and gained more of an online presence after Halfaxa. Boucher links this album to her vacation in Halifax, Canada. In 2020, Grimes talked about her older music, saying she didn’t realize songs had real lyrics, she just thought people were saying random things, which explains a lot.
After her collaboration EP, Darkbloom, she released her first album that achieved major success, Visions in 2012. While making the album, Grimes wanted to go completely insane and do anything that was musically possible. To do this, she locked herself in her apartment for three weeks and just sat down and worked on the album. She describes this experience by saying she felt as if she started to channel spirits and that her music was a gift from God. This was her first critically acclaimed album, and won her a record deal with 4AD.
Between the release of Visions and her next album Art Angels, Grimes remained in the public eye, and in 2013 posted a statement about her experience as a female musician and disappointment that her feminist stance was typically seen as anti-male. For this time period, it was pretty unusual for artists to speak up about things like this, so it was very brave of her to do so. Leading up to the Art Angels release, Grimes stayed busy with opening for Lana Del Rey, music videos, soundtracks, and the release of her lead single, Flesh Without Blood.
On Nov. 6, 2015, Grimes released Art Angels, which she described as orchestral emo production. For this album, she messed around with guitar, giving it a completely different sound to her previous releases. This album has two of her most popular songs, Kill V. Maim and Flesh Without Blood. Art Angels went number one on Billboard US alternative charts, and received the title of album of the year from numerous publications.
A little less than five years later, Grimes finally followed up Art Angels with her album Miss Anthropocene after conflicts with her label. Boucher describes this as her best album yet, and mentions that the video game Shadow of the Colossus reminds her of it. Her concept for this album was a fictional universe with a bunch of new gods that were building the simulation.
Shockingly, a few months later Boucher gave birth to her and Elon Musk’s oddly named baby. Grimes is definitely one of the weirdest people I have heard of, but she seems to be so weird that she is normal. I can’t wait to see what she has coming next, no matter how strange it is.
