The DSHS Jazz Band and Jazz Cats combined efforts to put on a concert for the community on May 16th.
The Jazz Band played some songs on their own, followed by the Jazz Cats’ a cappella piece. Then there were a few combined songs and, finally, some soloists who sang with the jazz band.
“The Jazz Cats, our jazz ensemble of 10 singers participated,” choir director Tom Gabrielsen said. “They sang a piece called ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ and ‘You Do Something to Me.’ Next, there was a solo of ‘Summertime’ by Kianna Rodriguez. Katy Patterson also sang a solo. The choir sang ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.’ Finally, the jazz band had three pieces that they played.”
The duo of the jazz genre plans to make their concerts into a tradition, as last year, they performed a concert for Christmas and another in the Spring.
Overall, Gabrielson said he was pleased with the results of the concert.
“The jazz band was really polished and tight,” he said. “Our singers were on top of their game, the concert went really well, and the audience seemed to enjoy it.”
