The DSHS track & field team is pumped up and ready for competition as the season is about to start. The coaches and athletes are itching to put their training to the test.
“I’m excited for our team this year,” assistant coach Ashley Laughlin said. “We’ve been practicing since the end of January and it looks like there is a lot of talent on this team.”
The first meet will be the testing ground for the team members to get a feel of where the team stands.
“This meet will provide us with a good starting point,” Laughlin said. “That starting point will help us determine our goals for district.”
The coaches have also been amazed by how close the team has become before the season has even begun.
“They are a very tight knit group,” Laughlin said. “They are a little goofy at times but they bring out the best in each other.”
For varsity members, like senior Nathan Schmitzer, track is a lot more than a form of entertainment.
“It’s a lot of fun and feels awesome to be a part of,” said Schmitzer.
The coaches have played a huge part in making track an amazing experience for the team athletes, like Schmitzer.
“The coaches push and guide me to where I need to be,” Schmitzer said. “They are amazing at maximizing my potential.”
Despite the many different events, all coaches and athletes believe the team will do well overall this season.
“I believe that the team is going to push each other and get to work this season,” Laughlin said. “They bring a level of competition that is amazing to witness.”
